Having worked several years to get home remodeling contractors, we heard a couple of things besides construct a room addition or the way to waterproof a shower. We learnt firsthand that there are contractors that were evil out there lying and looking to take advantage of you.
The bad and ugly
“Some” contractors will inform you just about anything to market their occupation. They make up stories and will make promises, whatever is required to seal the deal. Who wishes to work with someone like that or need to deal with that person for 3 weeks or so? You will need a contractor that has your back. Will do whatever is required to create the work right and also make you happy. At least that is what we believe that a contractor must do. The sad truth is some contractors view your project as a money making experience and much less as one remodeling experience. We know contractors twice your age with half the knowledge. They are just businessmen who have building experience.
Watch out for salesmen! Maybe they have the job a week and After getting fired by the used car dealer. My experience with sales folks is that they will tell you exactly what you are currently searching to hear to close the sale and don’t understand the details. When the job has been built they won’t be around. Who’ll be responsible for running your work and the employees? Speak to the contractor! You have to speak with their references. Call the homeowner and ask a whole lot of questions for example, did they perform as promised? Can they create change orders? Did they finish on time? How can you rate the quality?
In addition, we recommend for you to visit a recently finished job and talk to the homeowner and see the work for yourself. In the process, be sure that the contractor does not go. If the client was pleased by their job they won’t mind and at the same time they will be happy to promote the contractor’s business. Think about it, they were in your shoes a few months ago.
Get it in writing
Ensure you have the details all in writing. Make sure you have a payment / advancement schedule and you should not be compelled to pay before job completion. Get a start and finish date. We’ve observed remodeling contractors blame the homeowner because the job didn’t go as intended. Do not offer them a budget to use, which will be just like giving your credit card to a child. You need to have a list of what it is you’re getting for that sum and price.
Don’t be frightened
This guide is meant to protect you, not scare you. You will find you have to guard your home for the ones that are terrible and be informed, although good remodeling contractors out there. Bear in mind to watch out for the wolf in sheep’s clothing or something like this.
